From the sunny side of the Paznaun valley, the Bergbahnen Kappl cable car company takes you up into a vast mountain landscape. In winter, the cable cars and lifts provide access to the Kappl ski area, with 42.5 kilometres of slopes, 22 ski runs and pistes reaching altitudes of up to 2,700 metres.
The Kappl & See ski area offers even more variety. Together with the See ski area, the two independent ski areas provide 85 kilometres of pistes and 20 lifts and cable cars. In addition to sunny slopes and long runs, a snowpark adds extra variety to a day on the slopes. Family activities, winter hiking trails, freeride options and a range of activities away from the slopes offer plenty of alternatives to skiing. With one ski pass, you can enjoy both ski areas.
In summer, selected cable cars take hikers, bikers and families up to numerous routes and attractions, including the Mountain Carts and Sunny Mountain Adventure Park.

Much has changed since 1970
The history of Bergbahnen Kappl began in 1970 with the founding of what was then known as Kappl-Dias-Schiliftgesellschaft. Over the decades, the first lifts developed into the modern infrastructure enjoyed by winter and summer guests today. More recent milestones include the launch of the Kappl & See ski area in the 2023/24 winter season and the construction of the new Diasbahn cable car in 2025.
History of Bergbahnen Kappl
On 7 May 1970, the foundations were laid for what was then known as the Kappl-Dias-Schiliftgesellschaft. A total of 71 parties attended the founding meeting of the ambitious winter sports company, including representatives of the municipality and tourism association as well as 69 private shareholders.
Josef Wechner and Jakob Rudigier were appointed managing directors. The share capital amounted to 3,349,000 Austrian schillings, equivalent to around 243,400 euros.
Following the granting of planning permission by the provincial government on 2 July 1970, work began on implementing this ambitious project.
- 1970: Construction and commissioning of the Diassessellift and Mardinalift, as well as the purchase of a snow groomer
- 1971: Construction and commissioning of the Hirschenbad and Schönebel lifts
- 1972–1975: Slope expansion works and the purchase of new snow grooming machinery
- 1978/79: Commissioning of the Alblitt chairlift and the Alblitt T-bar lift
- 1979/80: Extension of the Alblitt T-bar lift to the Alblittkopf at an altitude of 2,690 m
In the 1979/80 season, Wintersport Kappl GmbH & Co KG, as the company was known at the time, transported more than one million guests for the first time.
- 1987: Replacement of the Diassessellift with a 4-seater gondola single-cable circulating ropeway
- 1988: Construction of the Gongall double chairlift (26 million schillings, 1,880,000 euros)
- 1989/1990: first use of snow cannons, before the snowmaking system was continuously expanded and improved
- 1997/1998: introduction of the 4+2 ski pass
- 1998/1999: Construction of the Alblitt 4-seater chairlift
- 1999/2000: Numerous improvements to the slopes
- 2000/2001: New architectural design for the valley station; slope improvements on the valley run
- 2001/2002: Construction of the Alblittkopf 4-seater chairlift; construction of the road underpass on the valley run
- 2002/2003: Installation of the snow-making system for the valley run
- 2003/2004: Construction of the Sunny Mountain adventure park, the snow-making system and the floodlit natural toboggan run
- 2004/2005: Expansion of the “Sunny Mountain” leisure and dining complex to include the “Almstüberl” full-service restaurant and the “Panoramabar”
- 2005/2006: Opening of Run 10, the “Almstüberl Run”
- 2007: Introduction of summer operations on the Alblittbahn and the Sunny Mountain Card
- 2007/2008: Expansion of the snow-making system at the Alblittkopf (2,690 m); construction of the pressure-boosting station and the snowboard fun park in Alblitt
- 2008/2009: Night tobogganing between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm; expansion of the children’s area towards the reservoir with two new magic carpets and the children’s slope; construction of the “Flaxiabfahrt”; Expansion of car park facilities; expansion of the snow-making system; membership of the “Freizeitticket Tirol”
- 2009: Construction of an Alpine herb and rock garden, the Dias themed circular walking trail, and a petting zoo
- 2009/2010: Replacement of the “Hirschenbad” practice lift with a new, 200-metre-long, covered conveyor belt; membership of the “Tirol Snow Card”; Expansion of the Sunny Mountain Restaurant by approx. 200 seats; construction of a professional fun park in the “Alblitt” area; expansion of the snow-making system on the race track and in the fun park
- Summer 2010: Construction of the Flaxi Village at Silbersee
- 2010/11: Launch of the new information channel with three stations; free Wi-Fi in all Sunny Mountain catering outlets; installation of the Alblittkopf panoramic camera; award of the ‘Piste Quality’ seal
- 2011/12: Construction of the permanent Zibob® course featuring Austria’s longest covered conveyor belt; installation of the Alblitt panoramic camera; Construction of the ski bus terminal at the Diasbahn valley station; construction of a new conveyor belt in the Sunny Mountain Adventure Park
- Summer 2013: Conversion of the “Alte Diasalpe” into an alpine museum; slope improvements on the valley run; installation of a summer panoramic camera in the adventure park; introduction of the “Silvretta Card all inclusive” summer card
- Winter 2013/14: Installation of a freeride checkpoint; 3 new ski routes
- Summer 2014: Expansion of the kiosk in the adventure park, new sun terrace by the kiosk
- Winter 2014/15: Snowmaking and slope improvements on the Latten run; purchase of new snow guns
- Summer 2015: Expansion of the adventure park with the low ropes course
- Winter 2015/16: Purchase of the snow-making system for the toboggan run; purchase of a new piste groomer
- Summer 2016: Expansion of the summer catering facilities in the adventure park; extension of the adventure park; construction of the disc golf course
- Winter 2016/17: Expansion of the Flaxi run in the adventure park; extension of the kiosk snack bar to include a covered area; completion of the snow-making system for the toboggan run, including snow-making at the depot, and installation of new snow-making machines; conversion of the valve house with direct feed to the valley pipeline without pre-pumping; Clearing work for the Piste 5 project, including terrain modification, renewal of the snow-making system and preparation of the water supply for the Alblitt snow-making system; construction of the new Flaxi run near the valve house
- Summer 2017: Installation of a new elevated tank for the drinking water supply; refurbishment and extension of the restaurant sink area, as well as relocation of the restaurant management office
- Winter 2017/18: Slope 5 and the Alblitt run were levelled, and extensive terrain adjustments were carried out, including the connection of ski trail 5 to Slope 5; renewal of the snowmaking system and conversion to a lance system; Installation of preparatory and transport pipes for snowmaking in the Alblitt area
- 2018: Construction of a new pumping station below the Dias I reservoir; expansion of the snowmaking system with transport and snow pipes, and construction of 15 snow chutes; Installation of 5 lances and 5 propeller machines; renewal of the electrical supply to the field pipes; purchase of a piste groomer (PB 600); remediation of a landslide in the Egg area (valley run); completion of the conversion from a limited partnership to a public limited company; Negative assessment of the ski area link with St. Anton am Arlberg by the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG) (verbally at the end of November, in writing the following year)
- 2019: Construction of the Dias II reservoir; slope improvements between the snow groomer garage and Tajaeck; Expansion of the car parks and installation of an additional diesel tank; launch of the toboggan run project (lower section)
- Summer 2020: Completion of the Dias II reservoir; further expansion and improvement works in the Sunny Mountain area
- Summer 2021: Car park extension opposite the valley station, approx. 50 new spaces; widening of the valley run in the Schafstall area; reforestation project to compensate for the new reservoir above Kuhlochweg; construction of the Dias Kappl Flow Trail
- 2022: Extension of the toboggan run to the valley station, including snow-making facilities, fencing and lighting; further car park expansion; completion of the Dias Kappl Flow Trail; refurbishment of the Mardinalift; completion of the reforestation project above the Kuhlochweg
- Summer 2023: Replacement of 10 snow cannons in the lower section of the valley run
- Winter 2023/24: Launch of the Kappl & See ski area (integrated ticketing system)
- Summer 2024: Preparatory work and regulatory procedures for the construction of the new Diasbahn; optimisations to the snowmaking system; construction of toilet facilities at the fish pond; extensive cable car inspections
- Winter 2024/25: Display gondolas for the new lift at the valley station and Kappl village; two new winter walking trails: Müllermahdlen and Sesselad
- 2025: Construction of the new toboggan run
- Winter 2025/26: Introduction of the new mascot “Sunny”; creation of slopes 13 “Sunny Waveline” and 14 “Sunny Funline” with Sunkid animations; mountain meadow winter hiking trail
